The top 10 Hikes near Banff Townsite

Banff is a wonderful base for outdoor holidays, and there are many great hikes within 20 minutes of Banff.  Here are the 10 Best:

#1. Healy Pass (19km, 705m): We love this hike, especially in Autumn when it is one of the best hikes for larch viewing.  Stunning views and a pleasant trail make this our favorite hike near Banff.

#2. Bourgeau Lake / Harvey Pass (20.4km, 1,075m): It’s a long day, but we barely notice. Once out of the trees the views are mind-blowing. Those with energy can summit Mount Bourgeau as well!

#3. Edith and Cory Pass Circuit (14.2km, 1,075m): This hike has it all with incredible views and varied, changing landscapes.  There is a bit of scrambling on this route, which almost kept it off the list – if you don’t like using your hands move onto #4.

#4. Sunshine Meadows (8.6km, 275m): This is a great family-friendly hike, and the view of Rock Isle Lake is one of the best views in the Rockies.  Take the Gondola or bus to the base of the  ski area to take the strain off the legs.

#5. Lake Minnewanka Lakeside (up to 17.1km, 360m): This is a longtime favorite, and a beautiful walk along a stunning lake.  Good in shoulder seasons you can walk as long or short as your want.

#6. Bow River Trail from Downtown Banff to Banff Springs Hotel (6km, 70m): We do this hike almost every time we are in Banff. A great family friendly hike and saves the hassle of parking.  A must-do if you are staying in Banff.

#7. Aylmer Lookout (25.8km, 1,085m): We love this hike, however the length puts it out of reach for many casual hikers.

#8. Johnston Canyon and Ink Pots (12km, 450m): This hike is incredible if you go outside peak times, such as early / late in the day or else shoulder season.  In summer, it’s very, very busy, which pushes it down the rating.

#9. Tunnel Mountain (4.3km, 300m): A great family friendly hike or an after-dinner hike for those in Banff.  Walk from downtown Banff up Tunnel Mountain for great views.

#10. Johnson Lake (3km, 30m): A great family friendly hike with stunning views.

Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity”
